Faller certification
In B.C., any worker who fells a tree larger than 6 inches in diameter must be certified to the BC Faller Training Standard (BCFTS).
A worker who holds a faller certificate is considered to have met the minimum training requirements in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation for falling in a forestry operation. However, even with certification, employers must still make sure all workers can safely complete assigned job duties. Specific factors employers must consider include type of timber, terrain, and slope.
Where to get certified
The BC Forest Safety Council and the Canadian Association of Geophysical Contractors administer faller training and certify fallers to the BC Faller Training Standard (BCFTS). Find more information and contact details at the BC Forest Safety Council and Canadian Association of Geophysical Contractors websites.
For wildland firefighters, the Wildfire Management Branch (Ministry of Forest, Lands & Natural Resource Operations) administers faller training.
For arborist technicians and utility arborists, the Industry Training Authority administers arborist training and faller certification can be arranged through HortEducationBC.
