Customized Recovery and Return-to-Work Program

Effective November 1, 2024, we’re enhancing the structure of our occupational rehabilitation (OR) programs with a new service, the Customized Recovery and Return-to-Work Program.

The new service will transition from the existing OR1, OR2, and ASTD streams toward a single integrated service in areas that currently offer OR2 services where the provider will assess and build a program customized for the individual worker. The new program will offer the same clinical supports from the previous OR2 and ASTD programs, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, kinesiologists, clinical counsellors, and physicians.

The OR1 program will continue to operate, but only in rural or more remote communities.

The Customized Recovery and Return-to-Work Program will be more streamlined, offering greater flexibility and a more worker-centred approach to a worker’s physical rehabilitation needs.

When a person requires occupational rehabilitation treatments due to an injury at work, we may refer them to our network of Customized Recovery and Return-to-Work Program service providers. This network is made up of providers who have long-term contracts with us. These contracts come up for bidding periodically.

Overview of services

The Customized Recovery and Return-to-Work Program includes physical therapists and kinesiologists, with optional supplemental services offered by physicians, counsellors, and/or occupational therapists. Service providers develop an individualized treatment plan to address the specific needs of each worker in the program. The program also focuses on integrating in-clinic rehabilitation with early return-to-work opportunities for workers when it is safe and suitable to do so.

Treatment plans may include:

  • Activities to promote flexibility, strength and aerobic conditioning
  • Real or simulated work activities
  • Medical or psychological support
  • Education on soft tissue healing and recovery, the value of exercise, proper posture and body mechanics, and pain management
  • Return-to-work planning and support, which may include visiting a job site
