The Province has announced legislative changes that will expand workers’ compensation coverage to app-based ride-hailing and delivery drivers in B.C. These changes come into effect September 3, 2024.

What it means for workers and employers

As of September 3, 2024, app-based ride-hailing and delivery drivers will be eligible to receive workers’ compensation benefits for work-related injuries and illness, including health care, wage-loss, and rehabilitation benefits. Find out what this means for you.

For workers

Whether you work full-time or part-time as an app-based ride-hailing or delivery driver, you should know and understand your rights and responsibilities. Everyone has a role to play in keeping the workplace safe.

If you have a work-related injury or disease, we want to help you as soon as possible. We understand it can be a stressful time, and we offer support throughout the claims process.

If you are injured on the job, start with the following steps:

  1. Report your injury immediately to your employer.
  2. See your physician.
  3. Report your injury to us by calling Teleclaim at 1.888.WORKERS (1.888.967.5377), or report online.

Once we’ve reviewed reports from you, your employer, and your physician, we will inform you whether the claim is accepted. See more information about how we determine eligibility for a claim.

When your claim is accepted, we’ll let you and your employer know what benefits and services we can provide. This might include:

  • Wage loss benefits
    • Wage loss benefits compensate workers who lose pay due to a work-related injury or illness.
  • Health Care benefits
    • We will cover the cost of the health care services and supplies that are considered reasonably necessary to treat your injuries.
  • Vocational rehabilitation
    • Sometimes an injury, occupational disease, or other factor can affect a worker’s ability to return to a previous job. That’s where vocational rehabilitation comes in.
