Workers struck by car speeding in traffic control zone

Incident summary
At a highway construction worksite, a paving crew was preparing to conduct road resurfacing work. A passenger automobile (car) travelling through the traffic control zone struck a traffic control person, who sustained injuries. The car then also struck a member of the paving crew, who sustained fatal injuries.

 

Investigation conclusions

Cause

  • Dangerous driving. The car entered a well-marked, well-lit traffic control zone, and the driver ignored the speed limit signs. The car side-swiped a car ahead of it, struck the traffic control person, and then struck the member of the paving crew. Based on information from the police, excessive vehicle speed and alcohol were causal factors in the incident.
