Fog and Health Effects in the Film Industry
Theatrical fog fluid used in the film and theatre industries often contains varying concentrations of glycol or glycerin, which can have negative health effects. This study aims to develop calibration factors for three fog types so concentration measurements can be taken onsite with a real-time aerosol monitor, and to assess the prevalence of health effects related to glycol and glycerin exposure in film studios in the Lower Mainland. The results could help to inform which types of fog would lead to fewer negative health effects on workers.
The researchers will conduct sampling of total aerosol concentration with a real-time monitor, and also with glycol or glycerin-specific media. The media will undergo laboratory analysis to determine glycol or glycerin aerosol concentrations and establish a calibration curve between the two measurement types. The researchers will also conduct a cross-sectional epidemiological study to evaluate any association between health effects related to glycol and glycerin fog exposure and the type of fog fluid used. They will use a questionnaire to assess health effects, and will monitor worker exposures during studio visits.
