Assessing Employee Safety Motivation

This study developed and tested a survey tool designed to assess employee safety motivation. Five different types of safety motivation were identified and a 16-item survey, known as the Self-Determined Safety Motivation (SDSM) scale, was created

This study is the first step toward the development of an assessment tool for evaluating employees motivation to work safely

The results of this research provide initial information about the validity and reliability of the SDSM scale as well as preliminary evidence that self-directed forms of motivation (i.e., based on personal safety values, personal interest in safety activities) may have influence on levels of employee safety motivation
