Dr. Aamir Bharmal named chief medical officer
Following an extensive recruitment process, Dr. Aamir Bharmal, MD, MPH, CCFP, FRCPC, has been named WorkSafeBC's new chief medical officer, effective November 4, 2024.
Dr. Bharmal is a public health physician who is passionate about injury and disease prevention, epidemiology, and health quality. He comes to WorkSafeBC from the BC Centre for Disease Control, where he has been serving as medical director of public health response, supporting provincial public health emergency preparedness and response, particularly for emerging infectious diseases.
Originally from Calgary, he completed medical school at the University of Alberta, residencies in family medicine and public health and preventive medicine at the University of Toronto, and a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins. His professional practice ranges from providing care to rural Indigenous populations and teaching medical students and residents, to coordinating public health responses and conducting scientific research related to opioid use, infectious diseases, and the effects of COVID-19.
As chief medical officer, Dr. Bharmal will focus on health care strategy, professional practice, outcome-focused treatment pathways, identifying emerging trends, and enhancing WorkSafeBC’s internal and external engagement and education.
