Physiotherapists and WorkSafeBC

Pursuant to section 21 of the Workers Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC implemented a new Physiotherapy Services Memorandum of Agreement on July 1, 2011, for a two-year term.

Please download a copy of the Agreement to review the changes.

Physiotherapists are not required to sign this Agreement. All physiotherapists providing treatment to injured workers are deemed to have accepted the terms of the Agreement. Physiotherapists not wishing to accept the terms of the Agreement should not provide treatment to injured workers.

Injured workers may contact Health Care Services at 604 232-7787 or toll-free 1 866 244-6404 for assistance in finding a physiotherapist.

Highlights from the new physiotherapy contract effective July 1, 2011

Clarification was added to the physiotherapy contract effective July 1, 2011 so that if a physiotherapist wants to request a transfer from Stream 1 to Stream 2, they must complete form 268 (PDF) or (Word) and send the form to the case manager for approval.

To avoid treatment delays, physiotherapists can now treat Stream 1 injuries prior to the claimant seeing a physician.

When a physiotherapist begins Stream 1 treatment on a worker, they have six visits to determine if an injury meets the criteria for Stream 2. If they identify this by the end of the sixth visit and they submit a treatment plan for Stream 2, they may begin treatment under Stream 2 on the worker until the claim owner indicates otherwise. A physician referral will be necessary as soon as possible once the request for the Stream 2 transfer is made for the physiotherapy to continue as Stream 2 treatment. If the physiotherapist identifies the injury as a Stream 2 injury after the sixth visit, the physiotherapist submits a treatment plan for Stream 2, and may continue treatment under Stream 1, but cannot begin treatment under Stream 2 until approved by the claim owner.
