2024 WorkSafeBC Student Safety Video Contest

Submit your original production for a chance to win cash!

It can be hard to stay focused all the time, but when you don’t pay attention at work, it can lead to accidents.

What’s keeping you from being safe at work? Maybe you’re on your phone texting or scrolling through social media, or listening to music on your earbuds. Maybe you’re trying to do too much at once. Or perhaps you’re having a hard time concentrating because you’re hungry, tired, or stressed. It’s important to be mindful of these and other mental and physical distractions, and how they can affect your health and safety on the job.

Staying focused at work is the theme for this year’s contest. Sometimes, something as simple as a short break can help you recharge and refocus. What else can you do to keep yourself focused at work, and how can your employer help?

Video considerations

Your video can be up to two minutes long. Think of a creative way to get your message across. You can use any style of video: drama, comedy, documentary, music video, stop-motion, animation, or mashups — the choice is yours! (Note: Only live-action productions will be considered for the bonus prize of the Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award. For more details, see the Prizes section below or or visit actsafe.ca)

Eligibility

You can enter the contest if you’re a B.C. student in Grades 8 to 12 with a teacher or youth organization sponsor. There’s one category for students in Grades 8 to 10 and one for students in Grades 11 and 12.

How to submit your video

Post your video on YouTube, then have your teacher or youth organization sponsor fill out the entry form and include the link to your video. We’ll review your video, and if it meets our criteria (no inappropriate language or images and no copyrighted music, please), we’ll link to your video from worksafebc.com. After submitting your YouTube link, you can also post your video on Instagram. Don’t forget to follow @WorkSafeBC and use the hashtag #SVCWorkSafeBC.

For more details, see the contest rules and the entry form.

Don’t want to make a video but still want to participate?

You can participate by viewing and rating your favourite videos. Check worksafebc.com regularly to see new videos as they are posted — and remember to get your family and friends to rate their favourites too!

Deadline

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2024. But remember that the sooner you post your video, the more time people will have to view and rate it.

Prizes

There’s a total of $10,000 in prize money to be awarded to the winning students and their schools or youth organizations. Entries will be judged on the impact of their safety message, original creative concept, and technical execution.

There are also two bonus prizes available:

Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award
Actsafe Safety Association, which supports health and safety for B.C.’s arts and entertainment industry, is presenting the Actsafe Aspiring Filmmaker Award. The winning filmmaker(s) of a live-action production will receive:
