Richmond, B.C., October 21, 2009 —Companies and individuals in B.C. are being recognized at the 2009 Safety Forum and Awards luncheon for outstanding efforts in workplace health and safety. Winners of both NAOSH Week Awards (North American Occupational Health and Safety Week) and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) Achievement Recognition Awards will be honoured today at the ceremony.

“We congratulate the award winners and celebrate those who have gone the extra mile to make their workplaces safer,” said Honourable Murray Coell, Minister of Labour. “Our government shares your solid commitment and vision to keeping workers safe and knows that true success depends on the dedication of employers, workers, and all partners in occupational health and safety.”

NAOSH Week is marked by a 1997 agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico dedicating a week in the year to focus on occupational health and safety. It was held from May 3-9, 2009 with the theme in B.C. of Safety & Health: A Commitment for Life: Stayin’ Safe, Healthy and Alive!Pollard Banknote in Kamloops won the Best Overall award for NAOSH Week in B.C. and were a joint winner of the Best Overall award in Canada along with the Canadian Forces Base – 19 Wing Comox in B.C.

Pollard Banknote made use of the theme with their safety lyrical performance video of staff singing and working to the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive”. Some of their other activities included organizing a NAOSH Week proclamation for the city of Kamloops, a bike rodeo, young worker safety presentation for local students, and a sign initiative for local businesses and buildings to display safety messages during the week.

The CSSE Achievement Recognition Awards also being presented today are given annually to individuals, organizations, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding commitment and effort to the occupational health and safety field.

One of the major CSSE national award winners from B.C. was LTS Solutions Ltd. (Ledcor) who won the Outstanding Achievement Award for developing a Supervisor HSE Training System. The “Learn and Do” training system provides an adult-learning oriented course delivery that focuses on the visual (learn by seeing), auditory (learn by hearing), and kinesthetic (learning by doing) styles of learning.

Another major CSSE national award winner in B.C. was London Drugs, who won the national Award for Special Projects for installing heart defibrillators in each of its stores in Western Canada – they are the first retailer in Canada to set up such a program. About 10-15 employees per store were trained in the use of the units involving more than 4,000 staff hours with ongoing yearly training to be provided.

“With the efforts and commitment of participating companies and individuals, major strides are being made in advancing safety cultures,” said Buck Page, president of the NAOSHWeek Steering Committee-BC. “Today we celebrate the achievements and efforts of individuals and organizations that are raising awareness of the importance of safety and health in the workplace.”

WorkSafeBC is an independent provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors that serves about two million workers and more than 200,000 employers.  WorkSafeBC was born from the historic compromise between B.C.'s workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers and fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. The organization is committed to safe and healthy workplaces and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits.
