WorkSafeBC chair appointed

Richmond, B.C., May 21, 2008— WorkSafeBC is proud to announce that Dr. Roslyn Kunin has been appointed chair of the Board of Directors for WorkSafeBC. Dr. Kunin will succeed Douglas Enns who has served as chair for six years.

WorkSafeBC directors are appointed by the Minister of Labour and Citizens’ Services.  The Workers Compensation Act requires that the board include a director from each of the employer and labour communities, a professional providing healthcare or rehabilitation services, an actuary and two public interest representatives. Dr. Kunin has been a director serving as a public interest representative for nearly six years and more recently as Vice Chair.

“For the past six years Doug Enns has provided exemplary service as chair and I’m disappointed that for personal reasons he is stepping away from the lead role,” said Labour and Citizens’ Services Minister Olga Ilich. “However, I’m pleased that he has taken the initiative to allow me to ensure strategic leadership continuity at WorkSafeBC, and that he will remain a member of the board until the end of the year and continue to share his experience and expertise.”

“I also welcome Roslyn Kunin to the position of chair.  As a renowned economist and long-serving board member, Dr. Kunin is ideally suited to build on WorkSafeBC’s many successes and provide excellent leadership on behalf of British Columbia’s workers and employers.”

Dr. Kunin is the principal of Roslyn Kunin and Associates Inc., an economic consulting company specializing in the labour market and human resources. In addition, she is Director of the BC office and Senior Fellow of the Canada West Foundation and a member of the National Statistics Council of Statistics Canada. Dr. Kunin has worked in the private sector, taught at several Canadian universities, and served twenty years as the regional economist for the Federal Government in BC and the Yukon. She is a member of the Order of Canada.

WorkSafeBC would like to thank Doug Enns for his years of leadership and service and congratulate Dr. Kunin on her appointment as chair.  “Doug has provided outstanding leadership over a period of significant transition for WorkSafeBC,” said Dave Anderson, president, WorkSafeBC. “We thank him for his commitment and vision and look forward to working with Dr. Kunin in her new role as Chair of the Board of Directors.”

WorkSafeBC is an independent provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors that serves more than two million workers and about 197,000 employers. WorkSafeBC was born out of a compromise between B.C.’s workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers and fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. WorkSafeBC is committed to safe and healthy workplaces and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits.
