Prince George, B.C., January 11, 2007 — The City of Prince George is the first recipient of the WorkSafeBC-sponsored northern Workplace Health and Safety Innovation Award for the implementation of an automated garbage collection system.
The Honourable Olga Ilich, Minister of Labour and Citizens’ Services presented the award to the City at the Northern British Columbia Business and Technology awards dinner at the Prince George Civic Centre. She said, “Health and safety is a responsibility shared among all of us — employers, workers, and the general public. We all need to work together to ensure that each worker comes home safely every day.”
The Workplace Health and Safety Innovation Award, sponsored by WorkSafeBC, recognizes changes at the worksite level that have a direct impact on worker health and safety. Entries were submitted to the nominating committee to ensure that award criteria were met. A separate selection committee then chose the recipient from the nominees that met the criteria.
WorkSafeBC sponsored the award through the Northern BC Business and Technology awards dinner to recognize innovation in health and safety in northern British Columbia.
Serving nearly two million workers and about 185,000 employers, WorkSafeBC is a provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors and funded by employers. WorkSafeBC was born out of a compromise between B.C.’s workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers or fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. WorkSafeBC is committed to a safe and healthy workplace and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits to workers injured as a result of their employment.
