Richmond, B.C., October 18, 2006 — B.C. companies and individuals are being recognized today at the 2006 Safety Forum & Awards Luncheon at Newlands Golf and Country Club in Langley for their outstanding promotion of workplace health and safety.
“We’re reminded that safe workplaces and safe working habits require a commitment from everyone in the workplace,” said Labour and Citizens’ Services Minister Olga Ilich. “I congratulate the winners on demonstrating leadership and innovation in conveying to all employees the importance of safe practices and healthy lifestyles.”
NAOSHWeek (North American Occupational Safety and Health Week) is held annually in Canada, the United States, and Mexico and is designed to raise awareness of workplace health and safety issues.
The Best Overall Award for NAOSHWeek in B.C. was a tie between the Capital Regional District (CRD) in Victoria and Pollard Banknote in Kamloops. The CRD held events ranging from a photo contest to training sessions and a special observance of the National Day of Mourning in recognition of workers killed, injured or disabled on the job. Among the activities organized by co-winner Pollard Banknote was a proclamation signing from the Mayor of Kamloops, safety training sessions to elementary and Grade 12 students and a week-long “Accident Scene Investigation” event that won the Most Innovative Award.
Vincent Russell, Director, Industry and Labour Services at WorkSafeBC said, “Our business is about safety and health at work and we congratulate the companies and individuals being recognized today who through their efforts have helped bring attention to safety in their own workplaces and lives. We are also pleased to provide specific support in sponsoring awards.”
WorkSafeBC is a sponsor in two categories of the CSSE (Canadian Society of Safety Engineering) Achievement Recognition Awards — one that recognizes programs tailored to meet the needs of young workers aged 15-24 and the other that acknowledges outstanding achievement in the B.C. trucking industry. CSSE Awards are presented annually to individuals, organizations, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding commitment and effort to the occupational health and safety field.
Also receiving recognition today were students and their teachers from high schools in B.C. who were presented cheques as winners of a young worker video contest sponsored by the Washington Marine Group, B.C. Art Teachers’ Association and WorkSafeBC.
WorkSafeBC is an independent provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors that serves nearly two million workers and about 185,000 employers. WorkSafeBC was born from the historic compromise between B.C.'s workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers and fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. The organization is committed to safe and healthy workplaces and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits.
