Richmond, B.C., May 15, 2008 — WorkSafeBC has partnered with the Safety / Health Awareness Research Program (SHARP), United Steelworkers, and BC Forestry Safety Council to co-sponsor the production of a television commercial that urges forestry workers in B.C.’s Interior to stay safe on the job by focusing on the task at hand.
The advertisement shows what can happen when a worker’s attention wanders away from his or her job activities ― the consequences can be disastrous.
“We want to remind workers and their families in the Interior forest industry to be vigilant about their health and safety at work,” explains Scott McCloy, WorkSafeBC’s director of Communications. “With all the distractions resulting from current economic challenges in the industry, we want to ensure workers and supervisors continue to focus on health and safety.”
“I think this ad has a very powerful message about focusing on working safely, especially with the current atrocious state of the forest industry,” adds Brad Evans, manager of employee relations for the Council of Northern Interior Forest Employment Relations (Conifer).
The ad, which started airing April 23 and, pending positive response, could run until November, 2008, is being broadcast on television stations in Kamloops (CFJC-TV), Terrace (CFTK-TV), Prince George (CKPG-TV), and Dawson Creek (CJDC-TV) ― areas that see a lot of worker activity within the forestry industry.
