Showing young workers the harsh reality

Michael Lovett brings his powerful message to B.C. schools to show what can happen to young workers.

When Michael Lovett walks into the classroom, he looks like a typical young man — jeans, t-shirt, and tattoos. The students are mildly interested.

When he starts to speak, they listen politely. But when he pulls up his pant leg to reveal a prosthetic limb — that’s when he really grabs their attention.

At the age of 18, Michael lost his leg in a sawmill accident. It was tragic and senseless, but that says Michael, is the “harsh reality.” Now he travels the province, visiting high schools, telling his story and encouraging students to take responsibility for their safety on the job.

Since January, Michael has taken that message to 119 B.C. secondary schools, and a total of 6,500 students.

It’s a powerful message. Watch a video stream of Michael Lovett's presentation.
