What to expect during an audit

The financial records of every employer are subject to audit at any time by WorkSafeBC assessment officers. Assessment officers travel throughout B.C. to fulfill their mandate.

As part of the audit process, you can expect an examination of your records and documents. This ensures the accuracy of your reported assessable payroll, and the validity of the industry classification(s) you've been assigned.

Examples of the types of records you may be asked to submit include:

  • Financial statements
  • Payroll records including T-4s
  • General ledgers
  • Any other records required to confirm you have paid the proper assessments on behalf of your workers (including principals of limited companies), and your unregistered subcontractors
  • Sales records
  • Contracts

The frequency, scope, and periods examined will vary, and are dependent on the type of work you do or the contractors you hired.

An audit examination may take place at your place of business, your accountant's office, or at a location designated by WorkSafeBC. When WorkSafeBC designates the location, you will be given at least 10 days written notice.

During the examination, the assessment officer will:

  • Verify your assessable payroll and industry classification(s)
  • Request payment of any outstanding assessments
  • Provide any additional information or resources you may need to accurately report your payroll and understand the payment process

Assessment officers also help employers understand WorkSafeBC policies and practices.
