raise climber
A mechanical powered work platform, temporary or permanent,
controlled from the cage underneath the platform, used to provide access to
the face of a raise or other working area.
rappel
The method of moving down a face or other steep slope by means
of a rope secured above and placed around a controlled descent device secured
to a belt or harness worn by a worker, and payed out gradually in the descent.
rate group
The WCB uses a classification system to determine the rate
each employer will contribute toward insurance costs. Rate groups are part of
that classification system. Base rates are assigned at the rate group level.
rated capacity or rated load
The maximum load designated by the manufacturer which a crane,
hoist or other piece of equipment is designed and built to lift.
rated load
The maximum load as designated by the manufacturer which may
be placed safely on a swing stage, and includes the weight of the workers, their
tools and equipment, any materials to be transported, and allowances for loads
such as trailing electric power supply cords, compressed air supply lines, abrasive
blasting feed supply lines, or any other loads, but does not include the weight
of the work platform or its supporting rigging.
readily available
When used in connection with an MSDS, available in a place
where a person can easily access and study the information it contains.
recompression chamber
A system consisting of one or more pressure vessels for human
occupancy, with associated utilities, controls and instrumentation, whose purpose
is to support diving operations, hyperbaric treatment, dive simulation and/or
scientific study and equipment testing.
reflectance
The ratio of the light reflected from a surface to that falling
on the surface, expressed as a percentage.
rehabilitation physician
The physician's role is to identify or confirm any medical barriers which may impact the client's ability to return to work and to provide clients reassurance in cases where the medical evidence is consistent with the treatment and return to work plans. In some cases the physician may choose to pursue diagnostic investigations. The program physician is available on a consultant basis.
remote workplace
A workplace which is located 2 hours or more surface travel
time away from a hospital.
reserve breathing supply
A secondary supply, other than the bailout bottle, of a breathing
medium of the appropriate mixture and of sufficient quantity to enable the diver
to return safely to the surface with all appropriate decompression stops.
restricted entry interval
The length of time representing a period of precaution that
must elapse after the application of a pesticide, before an unprotected worker
may be authorized to enter the treated portion of a building, structure, or
field to which the pesticide has been applied.
rig
Includes the derrick and all equipment that is directly involved
with drilling or servicing a well.
rigging
Fibre ropes, wire ropes, chains, slings, attachments, connecting
fittings and associated components.
risk
A chance of injury or occupational disease.
risk phrase
For a controlled product or a class, division or subdivision
of controlled products, a statement identifying a hazard that may arise from
the nature of the controlled product or the class, division or subdivision of
controlled products.
running scaffold
A double-pole scaffold comprised of 2 or more bays.
