Is Pascal-squared hour, a unit of sound exposure (for example,
1 Pa2h equals 85 dBA Lex and .5 Pa2h equals 82 dBA Lex).
peak sound level
The maximum instantaneous sound level, in dBA.
per claim limit
The limit we place on the cost of large claims to lessen their impact on an employer's experience rating.
percussion drill
An air or hydraulic-driven drill that breaks by impact.
permanent powered platform
A powered platform which is a permanent installation on a
particular building or structure.
personal eyewash unit
An eyewash that supplements an emergency eyewash facility
by delivering immediate flushing for less than 15 minutes.
personal fall protection system
An individual worker's fall protection system, composed of
a safety belt or full body harness, and lanyard, lifeline, and any other connecting
equipment, that is used to secure the worker to an individual anchor or to a
horizontal lifeline system.
personal flotation device (PFD)
A device that, when worn correctly, provides a specified buoyancy
to support a conscious person in an upright or backward leaning position, but
is not designed to turn a person from a face-down to a face-up position in the
water.
personal lock
A lock provided by the employer for use by a worker to ensure
personal lockout protection such that each lock when applied is operable only
by a key in the worker's possession, and by a key under the control of the supervisor
or manager in charge.
Personal Optional Protection
Personal Optional Protection (POP) is optional workplace insurance
for partners and proprietors who are not automatically covered under the Workers
Compensation Act. POP provides wage loss and medical coverage for work-related
injuries or occupational disease.
pest
An injurious, noxious or troublesome insect, fungus, weed,
rodent, parasite or other organism.
pesticide
A micro-organism or material that is represented, sold, used
or intended to be used to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate a pest and includes:
(a) a plant growth regulator, plant defoliator or plant desiccant, and (b) a
control product, other than a device, under the Pest Control Products Act (Canada).
physical therapist
As rehabilitation professional, a physical therapist assists injured workers in reaching their maximum movement potential, strength and physical abilities. A physical therapist may work in many settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice, home care programs and long term care facilities. Physical therapists are involved in orthopaedics, ergonomics, neurology, and almost every other aspect of health care.
physician
A person registered under the Medical Practitioners Act.
physiotherapist
Same as physical therapist (the latter term preferred for literature purposes).
point of operation
The danger area in a machine where a part is being formed
or work is being done.
portable powered platform
A powered platform any part of which is not permanently installed
or attached to a particular building or structure and which may be removed and
relocated elsewhere as required.
portable switch
A movable track resting on top of a regular track upon which
a train car may be diverted for passing.
portable tank
A closed container that is designed to be movable while containing
liquid, which is equipped with skids, mountings or accessories to facilitate
handling of the tank by mechanical means and is not permanently attached to
a transporting vehicle, as defined in the B.C. Fire Code.
potential for delay
A likelihood that the transport of an injured worker to medical
treatment may be delayed 15 minutes or more after the time the injured worker
is ready to be transported.
power system
All plant and equipment essential to the generation, transmission
or distribution of electricity, including any plant or equipment that is out
of service, being constructed or being installed.
power transmission part
Any moving part of a machine that transfers power from a power
source to a point of operation.
powered platform
A suspended swing stage which is raised or lowered by other
than manual means.
practicable
That which is reasonably capable of being done.
premiums
Your premiums are what you pay for WCB insurance. To calculate
the cost of your premiums, multiply your net rate by your assessable earnings.
primer
An explosive to which a detonator or other initiating device
has been attached.
probe hole
A borehole drilled ahead of or at an angle to the heading
being worked to probe for conditions that lie ahead or around the underground
working.
product identifier
For a controlled product, the brand name, code name or code
number specified by a supplier, or the chemical name, common name, generic name
or trade name.
professional engineer
A person who is registered or licensed to practice engineering
under the provisions of the Engineers and Geoscientists Act.
professional geoscientist
A person who is registered or licensed to practice geoscience
under the provisions of the Engineers and Geoscientists Act.
proof test
A test applied to a product to determine material or manufacturing
defects.
psychiatrist
A person trained as a physician with a specialty in the diagnosis and medical treatment of abnormal behaviour.
psychologist
A psychologist diagnoses and treats the psychological aspects
of a claimant's compensable injuries. As well, psychologists assess permanent
impairment of psychological functioning and provide consultation to other staff
regarding treatment and claims management.
An integral member of the treatment team, a psychologist provides psychosocial
support and recommendations for clients during the treatment program, and provides
assessment, treatment and education services directed toward reducing the psychosocial
barriers affecting the client's ability to return to work.
A psychologist holds a doctoral degree in Psychology, and is a licensed practitioner
under the BC Health Professions Act.
psychology intern
During the final phase of completing their doctoral degree in psychology, psychology interns work at WCB full-time for 12 months while supervised by WCB psychologists. They provide services that are essentially similar to those provided by a psychologist.
psychometrist
With university training in the areas of psychology and assessment, psychometrists assists the psychologist in administering and scoring psychological tests.
