In 2003, the WCB Research Secretariat issued a request for proposals to evaluate the risk of heart disease and heart injury in professional firefighters, police officers, and ambulance paramedics.
In 2004, the Board of Directors awarded funding to Dr. Paul Demers (UBC) and his research team for their proposal entitled "Heart Disease Among Firefighters and Paramedics". The research began July 1, 2004 for a term of three years. Periodic updates on the progress of the research will be posted on the researcher's web site.
The goal of this research initiative is to advance our understanding of whether a relationship exists between heart disease and employment as a professional firefighter and ambulance paramedic in British Columbia. The information derived from the research will support decision-making related to whether heart disease/injury in firefighters will be included in Schedule B to the Workers Compensation Act.
