Brent Farnsworth

Occupational Safety Officer
Investigations Section
Surrey, B.C.

“My job can be exciting, and sometimes nerve-wracking and horrific. As an accident investigator, you never know what’s going to happen when you get a call that there’s been a serious or fatal accident somewhere in the province.

There’s no such thing as a typical day. Conducting accident investigations is always challenging, and your days aren’t routine because there’s always something new going on. Especially when you specialize in an industry and see how things are made and developed, you get in very deep, which is exciting and engrossing.

I’ve been to a number of accident scenes where there’s been a fatality and there are no witnesses — it’s our job to try and piece it together. We work with a team of ergonomists, safety officers, hygiene officers, case managers, and engineers to try and figure out what has happened, and it’s very gratifying when that happens.

As part of our role as investigators, we alert industry and related businesses of our findings. We all have a common goal to make sure everyone goes home in one piece at the end of the day. It’s very satisfying when we can learn how to prevent the same accident from happening to someone else.”
